Portfolio Guidance

A crucial part of your apprenticeship is the portfolio of work that you submit towards the end of your apprenticeship. The portfolio influences more than any other component, the overall apprenticeship grade – Pass, Merit, or Distinction.

You are not expected to produce reams of paper for your portfolio, but you will be expected to provide documents that you have created to demonstrate application of your learning. There is a list of areas that you must provide at least one piece of evidence for per area. To ensure that you cover all areas, we have created a spreadsheet for you to complete as you create your evidence. Please see the following links to assist you in creating the evidence required:

A typical single piece of evidence will be no longer than 2500 words (more likely 1500 words) and you are required to complete up to a maximum of 5 items for your portfolio.

The Institute for Apprenticeships provide a Information communication technician assessment plan that contains some very useful information about the portfolio and particularly the distinction criteria!

The following shows an example of how an apprentice completed the reference grid, although I have renamed the documents to provide some anonymity.

The slides from the classroom session on portfolio can be accessed here. Please remember that you must not put the reflective section into your evidence.
